Iowa City District C: Scott McDonough
Scott McDonough, Iowa City candidate
Oct. 11, 2015 12:00 pm, Updated: Oct. 12, 2015 2:17 pm
I am a dedicated and vested member of the Iowa City community. Through many years in Iowa City, first as a student at the University of Iowa, then a small-business owner, a parent of Iowa City school students (two at City High and one at Horace Mann Elementary) and as an active member and leader of a number of civic groups, I have gained a deep understanding of our community.
I believe I will lend a moderate, pragmatic and experienced voice to the Iowa City Council. Having graduated from UI, I appreciate the impact the university has on our community and economy. Owning McDonough Structures has provided extensive experience in operating and leading an organization and an understanding of how to work with various groups in order to achieve common goals. And as a parent and active citizen of Iowa City, I appreciate the energy and dedication of our fellow citizens who are working to make our community better for everyone. I am deeply committed to making Iowa City an even better place to live.
Through my volunteer work, I have witnessed the diversity of the numerous groups that strive to make our community a better place to work and live. As a participant in many of these organizations, I have attempted to do my part as well. My background includes participation in:
' Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity, board president
' Englert Theatre, board of directors
' Johnson County Affordable Homes Coalition
' Iowa City Board of Appeals
' Iowa City School District Music Auxiliary Board
' Member of the Chamber of Commerce
' Member of 100+ Men Who Care: Hawkeye Chapter
As your Iowa City Council representative, my priorities will include:
' Strengthening our economy: Iowa City is moving forward, yet we must continue to grow while balancing growth with community. A vibrant economy and strong tax base creates and funds the amenities and programs that make us exceptional.
' Addressing affordable housing: Having some of the most expensive housing in the state is a major challenge for Iowa City. Utilizing my construction background coupled with my experience with the Affordable Homes Coalition and Habitat for Humanity, I believe I am positioned to provide a unique perspective to meeting this challenge.
' Supporting our cultural and recreational amenities: I care about our heritage as is evidenced by the Historic Preservation Awards presented to McDonough Structures. And as an avid biker, I encourage and support our walkable and bikeable city as well as our vibrant cultural scene.
I am asking for and appreciate your support.
