Hiawatha City Council: Dennis Norton
Dennis Norton, council candidate
Oct. 25, 2015 5:00 am
My name is Dennis Norton, a citizen of Hiawatha for 38 years and a current City Council member completing my first term in office. My wife Linda and I have been married almost 50 years. We have two children, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The priorities that establish the foundation of who I am are God, Family and Work.
I retired from Rockwell-Collins after 38 years working primarily in the Finance and Program Office areas of employment. My positions were Cost Account Manager, Manager Program Planning & Control, Principal Project Manager, etc.
My Civic Experience includes a Board Member of Planning & Zoning Committee, Advisory Board Member of Hiawatha RAGBRAI 2015 and Charter member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish previously serving as Finance Committee Co-Chair and Chair.
My efforts this past term of office has been to learn about the intricacies of city government, apply my previous work experience to the new role of council member, get to know the City Hall personnel and my fellow council members and learn from this team of current city government personnel. I believe my efforts have been somewhat fulfilled but, there is much more to learn and will be honored again to serve another term of office. I will expand on my city government knowledge therefore striving to make the right decisions for the citizens of Hiawatha.
As a citizen of Hiawatha and being elected to the city council these past four years and witness the care and passion our Mayor and my fellow council members have for the city of Hiawatha. Their decisions impacting the city are thought out, discussed and decided upon knowing that they have effects on people beyond themselves! As Teddy Roosevelt stated 'the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.”
Our accomplishments these past four years include actions such as voluntary annexations, Boyson Road / Robins Road intersection upgrade, new Zoning Code developed and implemented using citizen's group, Satellite Fire Station property acquired and plans developed, Library expansion planning in process, progress on Tower Terrace interchange, etc.
During this next stage of my life I have dreams and aspirations for Hiawatha as the next council member and I believe the future for 'Beautiful Hiawatha” is bright and I am looking forward to being part of the process.
