I'm running for re-election to my second term on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.
I've been an active and involved resident of Johnson County for 25 years. I've served on commissions at the city, county and state levels. I've worked for state and federal government, for non-profits, owned my own business, volunteered for numerous local organizations, and have been a supervisor for more than four years.
Over the years, I've been involved in issues such as land use, conservation, civil and human rights, fiscally responsible government, and open and good government practices.
Every day on the Board of Supervisors, I use my liberal arts background and decades of government and community experience to provide a positive influence on issues important to Johnson County.
My first term as supervisor has gone by quickly, but I am proud of the progress and accomplishments I've helped make. For example, we've established a county reserve policy and created a finance department; we've made a broader commitment to rebuilding and maintaining roads, paved shoulders, and trails; and we completed the Dubuque Street trail.
In addition, we've maintained a commitment to enhancing the quality of life in our county through economic development, recreation and investing in human services, mental health/disability services and block grants to local agencies. One of the things I am most proud of is selling 1105 S. Gilbert Ct. to the Crisis Center for $1, helping start the 1105 Project.
While I have been supervisor, the county has created a sustainability plan, hired a sustainability coordinator, established stormwater management standards, and created wind energy facilities and downcast outdoor lighting ordinances.
While we have accomplished much, my to-do list continues to grow. Some of my goals for the next four years include: Expand funding for human services; increase conservation; expand recreational opportunities; diversify our economy, including local foods and rural tourism; develop and maintain a good infrastructure; centralize general and vehicle purchasing and fleet management; better use employees by cross training and job sharing; and continue strong financial management and financial policies.
I work hard, listen, study issues, find common ground, and demand fiscal responsibility. I would very much appreciate your vote on or before June 3.
