Education is the ‘great equalizer’

In the 1830s, Horace Mann fought to establish the first secular public schools. He referred to public education as the “great equalizer.” Nearly 200 years later, those words still ring true. It is the idea of public schools as the ‘great equalizer” that drives my passion for public education.
After 33 years as a teacher in the Cedar Rapids Community School District, I know firsthand the impact of a high quality public education. It is the doorway that leads to opportunity for all of our students. It is, indeed, the great equalizer that Mann spoke about.
My priorities for the CRCSD include:
1. Expanding pathways for all learners — The District is in the early stages of planning and implementing a comprehensive program of Career and Technical Education. This program allows our students to graduate with either college credit or a career certification, giving them a variety of postsecondary choices.
2. Establishing a physical and cultural school environment that promotes first class learning experiences. — The Facilities Master Plan is part of a necessary long range plan to upgrade facilities. For too long, we have been making do with aging structures that provide a less than optimum learning environment. I also believe that beyond the physical surroundings, students must be made to feel safe and valued. We must strive for a system that allows every student to be heard and seen and accepted for who they are.
3. Investing in highly qualified staff — The classroom teacher is the most critical factor in student success. State funding must keep up with inflation so that we are able to attract and retain the best educators. As legislative liaison, advocating for increased state funding is a priority for me. Our “grow your own” program for teachers and administrators should be expanded.
4. Using public money for public schools — I oppose vouchers and I would support legislation that requires private schools to meet all the same standards required of public schools.
5. Providing effective board, school and community leadership — Board members should be present in the community. Facilitating public input is encouraged when we are visible and involved in the community.
Being entrusted with the education of our children is an honor and a responsibility. One I take very seriously. I am the only educator on the ballot and I look forward to bringing the perspective and expertise of a career educator to the board table for the next four years.
Cindy Garlock is one of five candidates running for two at-large seats on the Cedar Rapids school board.
