Cedar Rapids at large: Carletta Knox-Seymour
Carletta Knox-Seymour, Cedar Rapids Council candidate
Oct. 18, 2015 2:19 am
I am fighting for change. People have always fought for the right to participate in their government. I am fighting for that same right for myself and others.
Being a council member will give me the opportunity to be the voice for those who feel unheard. Every where I canvassed in the city, a common theme emerged while talking with individuals from all demographics who stated that they do not feel their city government officials really listen to them. I want to change that perception.
I believe that government is for the people and by the people. I believe that government officials are servants of the people, and that they serve at their pleasure. I want to do what is best for the citizens of Cedar Rapids. Bearing in mind that doing the best may not always be an answer of yes. In order to manage the city, compromise and diplomacy must have its place and I am willing to be part of this process. In over five years of service as a City Planning Commissioner, I learned to listen carefully.
As our city grows with a diverse population, we need council members who understand the needs of multiple demographics so they can be more responsive as leaders. In the past the needs of certain groups in Cedar Rapids were not provided for such as, senior citizens, the African-American community and college students. This means that issues like quality public transportation, youth violence prevention, and senior citizen services have not been adequately addressed. And because issues of the past were never resolved, the city continues to marginalize these groups. I am fighting to change this. That is why the city government has to have a paradigm shift, and it has to happen now.
Another change that I am interested in is reducing unemployment and underemployment by attracting mid-skill manufacturers, as well as high-tech manufacturers to the city, which in turn expands the tax base. Along with this, my vision is to have 100 percent literacy in Cedar Rapids. A trainable population attracts industry.
Inasmuch as I would like my visions to go forth, I understand that it will take the cooperation of fellow council members. For the whole city to experience success, I will need the continual support and input of the citizens of Cedar Rapids once elected.
I sincerely ask for your support on Nov. 3. I thank you in advance.
