After my home flooded in 2008, I worked helping people with all the problems that arose with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
At this time, I got involved in the Oak Hill Jackson Neighborhood Association. This experience led to many trying and wonderful opportunities, such as working with community people on starting different programs; starting the first free income tax program for low-income clients; and working with the state and city for The HAND Program in the Oak Hill Jackson Neighborhood, where all the new homes are now built on empty lots after the flood. This neighborhood plan was approved in 2000 by the city.
In 2005, I became active in the process of changing city form of government and was appointed to the City Charter Commission. I was then elected to City Council for the 2005-2006 term.
I would like to use this opportunity to rejoin the City Council to use my energy and years of experience to give back to the people of Cedar Rapids.
My first priority would be to start working on our flooding problem as we need protection on both sides of the river.
