University Heights to hold special council election Tuesday
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - Residents of the small town of University Heights will have a chance to fill its vacant city council seat during a special election Tuesday.
Virginia Miller and Douglas Swailes are both on the ballot for a term that expires at the end of 2019. Noah Hughes, who was elected to the seat in November, resigned because he moved outside city limits.
Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday in City Hall, 1302 Melrose Ave.
Forty-five people had voted early as of Monday afternoon.
Iowa's new voter ID law will be in effect during the election. A list of forms of IDs can be found on the Secretary of State's website.
The new council member will join Nick Herbold, Dotti Maher, Liesa Moore and Silvia Quezada in leading the town of about 1,000, which is landlocked by Iowa City.

The University Heights City Council convenes a special meeting on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017, following the resignation of Mayor Wally Heitman. The council decided to appoint an individual to the mayoral vacancy for the remainder of the term, which will be voted on Feb. 14. (Michael Ramm, The Gazette)
