Despite a historic flood that displaced and interrupted many research programs last summer, University of Iowa faculty generated a record $429.5 million in external grants and funding support last year.
The 2008-2009 total was a 10.3 percent increase over the previous year, UI officials announced this morning in Iowa City.
The UI has seen consistent increases in external funding over the past 23 years.
The total for fiscal year 2009, which ended June 30, exceeded one-third of a billion dollars for the 18th consecutive year.
The UI ranks 20th among public universities in terms of federally financed expenditures for research and development, according to the most recent National Science Foundation survey in 2007.
