Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is prevalent in Iowa homes. High levels of radon gas can be found in both new and old homes, and homes with or without basements. According to the EPA, it is the #1 cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and is responsible for approximately 21,000 deaths each year. The only way to know if your family is at risk is to test your home with a radon test kit.
Radon test kits are available year-round at Linn County Public Health, but during January Linn County Public Health will be offering a "buy one, get one free" special on short-term radon kits. The cost of a short-term radon test kit is normally $5.
(Limit 5 free test kits per person.)
