Roman Apartments come down for medical mall project

Jan. 7, 2011 10:45 am
The 1930-built Roman Apartments, 1115 Second Ave. SE, was demolished this morning to make way for Physicians' Clinic of Iowa's new medical mall.
The building was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, but a plan to relocate the historical apartment building, as well as another historic building next door, failed to materialize.
The City Council voted this fall to close part of Second Avenue SE for the complex, which will anchor a new medical district between St. Luke's and Mercy Medical Center.
A D.W. Zinser Excavating crew demolishes the Roman Apartments at 1115 Second Ave. SE at 9 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 7. The 1930-era apartment building is being torn down to make way for Physicians' Clinic of Iowa's planned medical mall. (Dave DeWitte/The Gazette)
