Rally takes on Grassley’s Supreme Court stance
May. 17, 2016 8:49 pm
IOWA CITY - The League of Conservation Voters held a rally Tuesday to encourage Iowa City residents to sign a petition or write letters to Sen. Chuck Grassley on what they believe to be his blockade of the nomination of Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court.
John Shang, a volunteer for the group, spoke to a group of about 10 protesters who attended the 'Do Your Job” rally at Iowa City's Pedestrian Mall. Shang, of Iowa City, said he wanted to be a part of the rally because the refusal to move forward with a new Supreme Court nomination 'doesn't seem to be the way of American politics.”
Nick George, of Cedar Rapids, attended the rally and said he has called Grassley's office multiple times to express his concern.
'I feel like he needs to certainly take into consideration this nomination and get us nine judges like we need,” George said.
Grassley, head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which would hold confirmation hearings, is among the Senate GOP leaders who said shortly after the February death of Justice Antonin Scalia that they would not move on any nominee picked by President Barack Obama.
