Republican state lawmakers on Thursday chose Sen. Amy Sinclair as the new president of the Iowa Senate following the defeat of current Senate President Jake Chapman in Tuesday’s midterm election.

The four Iowa appellate and 61 district and associate district judges received enough votes in Tuesday’s retention election to remain on the bench. All the judges received above 60 percent of “yes” votes.

The results suggest a continuation of the urban-rural divide playing out across the nation, as well as the move of Iowa counties near the Mississippi River toward the Republican Party.
