CEDAR RAPIDS - A new gateway sign to welcome southbound motorists on Interstate 380 to Cedar Rapids will cost $90,000 less than the city's estimate of $255,000.
The City Council this week awarded the contract for the sign to Ricklefs Excavating Ltd. of Anamosa, which submitted the low bid of $164,777 to win the job over three other contractors.
The work will begin by April 20 and will take up to five months to complete.
The gateway sign is similar to one constructed for motorists entering the city from the south. That sign cost about $130,000.
The new sign will be twice as large because it sits farther from the highway, city officials have said.
