Low turnout reported in Iowa City school board special election
Jul. 19, 2016 5:08 pm
IOWA CITY - Officials are reporting very low voter turnout for a special Iowa City school board election taking place today.
According to precinct reports, fewer than 1,000 school district residents had cast ballots as of 11 a.m. Reports said the turnout rate was about 1.4 percent, meaning about 935 of the district's 66,669 voters had turned out.
JP Claussen, Paul Roesler and Janice Weiner are competing for the seat left vacant when Tom Yates resigned in May. The winner is to complete a term that runs through September 2019.
Polls remain open until 8 p.m. A list of polling places can be found on the Johnson County Auditor's website.
The new school board member is to be sworn in on July 26 and could be a deciding factor when it comes to choosing which students attend the new Liberty High.
