Loebsack continues fundraising lead

U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack, D-Iowa City, raised more than $235,000 in the third quarter, outpacing the Republican who wants to run against him again next year.

Loebsack raised $135,196 from individuals from July 1 through Sept. 30, as well as $99,525 from political action committees and $491.40 from political party committees, according to reports submitted to the Federal Election Commission.

Sunday was the deadline for filing the third quarter financial disclosure reports.

Republican Christopher Peters, of Coralville, reported that he raised $35,607 for the quarter, with all of it coming from individual donations.

Loebsack ended the quarter with nearly $1.5 million in cash on hand. Peters reported having $26,169 in the bank as of Sept. 30.

Peters' campaign also reported a debt of $110,000, which came from a series of personal loans the Republican made to his committee last year, when he ran unsuccessfully against Loebsack in the 2nd House District race.

Peters announced in July he would seek the Republican nomination to run again next year.

So far, he's the only Republican to have announced a candidacy for the seat. The filing deadline for the 2018 primary isn't until next March.
