The Johnson County Board of Supervisors voted Thursday night to select the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center for its animal control services.
Supervisor Rod Sullivan said the board voted 4-1, choosing the Iowa City center over contracting with the Cedar Valley Humane Society, an option officials had been exploring. Supervisor Sally Stutsman was the lone dissenting vote.
Sullivan said the decision was based on what supervisors felt was the best in terms of service they provide to the county's constituents.
"It's a lose-lose situation," Sullivan said. "Either we create a situation where some people don't know where to go [for animal control] or it costs a lot more money. I didn't find either option palatable."
Sullivan said "everybody is extremely frustrated with the city of Iowa City" beyond the animal control issue and he will address the rift "to the extent I can."
