Iowa driver’s licenses get a new design
Jun. 5, 2018 12:59 pm
Iowans who renew their driver's licenses or state identification cards - or obtain one for the first time - will see some changes to the look of the cards.
The Iowa Department of Transportation said Tuesday that any cards issued after June 2 will have a new design and security features. The new cards display the golden dome of the Iowa capitol building and Iowa's state motto. They also include new security features, the department said in a news release.
'This newly designed card allows us to stay on the leading edge of security technology to effectively prevent driver's license fraud and identity theft,” said Melissa Spiegel, director of the department's Motor Vehicle Division.
The department said it will provide the new cards as Iowans apply for or renew licenses moving forward. The cards will be available at all existing service centers, kiosk renewal sites and online.
Iowans do not need to exchange their cards until they expire or need to be replaced for another reason. The new design does not disqualify currently valid cards, the department said.
