State liquor regulators are considering limits and even a ban on the sale of Everclear in the wake of a drinking incident that put a Drake University student in the hospital with alcohol poisoning.
Everclear, a high-concentration liquor of 151 proof in Iowa, is popular with college students, where it's often added to punch-style drinks and other types of liquor.
The Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Commission will hold a public meeting on Tuesday in Des Moines. Administrator Lynn Walding says the commission wants comments about Everclear and other high-alcohol-content drinks. The panel is considering regulations that could range from additional consumer education to limits on bottle sizes to an outright ban of such products.
Thirty-one other liquor products are sold in Iowa that are 100 proof or more.
