IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Iowa City's proposal to ban vendors outside Kinnick Stadium on football game days could be sacked.
Mayor Matt Hayek says he opposes the ban recommended by a city committee and would be open instead to additional regulation of vendors to address concerns about safety and commercial tailgating.
And City Manager Tom Markus told the Iowa City Press-Citizen he believes a permitting system rather than a ban would go "a long way to at least limiting some of those concerns."
Iowa football fans reacted angrily last week to the proposed ban recommended by a city committee. The idea will be discussed by the City Council on Monday. City regulator Doug Boothroy says if city officials don't want to ban vendors, they must come up with a way to better regulate them.
