Hubbell considering bid for governor

Des Moines businessman Fred Hubbell announced Tuesday he's exploring a bid for the Democratic nomination for governor.
Hubbell, former chief executive and chairman of Equitable of Iowa Cos., criticized the Branstad administration in a statement and said the state needs more broad-based economic growth that helps all Iowans, not just the wealthy.
He is the latest Democrat to express interest in running for governor in 2018, presumably against current GOP Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds.
Hubbell said forming the exploratory committee would allow him to travel the state and meet with Iowans as he considers whether to formally launch a campaign.
'The current Governor and Lt. Governor have failed miserably on their own job goals,' he said in a statement. 'We need jobs in every county in this state — more jobs in more places. Iowans work hard and take care of each other. We deserve an economy that works for everyone, not just the sliver of people at the top.'
He said that, as governor, 'I would offer my extensive leadership background and skills to put Iowa first and guide our state to real economic success.'
The Hubbell family long has been a prominent one in Des Moines, going back to the 1850s. In fact, the family once owned Terrace Hill, now the official residence of the governor.
Fred Hubbell also is a prominent donor to charitable and political causes. He's been a donor to Democratic candidates and to Planned Parenthood.
Already, state Sen. Nate Boulton, former Iowa Democratic Party Chair Andy McGuire, former Iowa Department of Natural Resources Director Rich Leopold and former Des Moines school board President Jon Neiderbach have launched campaigns. All are from Des Moines.
State Rep. Todd Prichard of Charles City has formed an exploratory committee, too. And Davenport Alderman Mike Matson has said he's thinking about running.
Also, John Norris, a longtime Iowa Democrat who was a top aide to former Gov. Tom Vilsack, is thinking about it.
