Grassley's Twitter account hacked
Jan. 23, 2012 4:00 pm
Sen. Charles Grassley's Twitter account was hacked Monday, one of the tell-tale signs being the hacker Tweeted in complete sentences.
Grassley is among the most-followed members of Congress on the social network. He updates the account himself and is well known for short updates that frequently leave out complications like vowels, verbs, adjectives and punctuation.
On Monday, around 12:30 p.m., the Twitter feed was hacked by someone who proclaimed they were a follower of “Anonymous,” a hacker group known for political activism. The hacker urges Iowans to vote against Internet copyright protection bills Stop Internet Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA). Both acts were placed on hold last week after Congress noted widespread protests.
Grassley had supported the acts, but withdrew that support after the protests.
Before getting off the account, the hacker tweeted seemed to indicate he or she attended school in Osage, but there was no way to confirm if that was or was not true.
“Well, its been fun getting Chuck's account this week, so I better get off. I got nothing better to do since we got a snow day here in Osage.”
Grassley's press secretary Jill Kozeny confirmed the Twitter account had been hacked while Grassley was flying from Iowa to Washington.
“Staff noticed today's hacking after the first false Tweet was posted, and the office immediately called Twitter to obtain access to the account so the password could be changed. The password has been changed, and Senator Grassley controls the account again,” Kozeny said an hour after the account was hacked.
Kozeny said the account had not been hacked in the past.
Among other Tweets from the hacker:
- “I really wanted Herman Cain to get president this year.” Grassley did not endorse Cain.
- “Yes, it's surprising that I'm actually writing in full sentences with space and correct grammar/spelling”
- “#WINNING”
Grassley has been an avid Twitter user and has more than 33,700 followers. He Tweets from his Blackberry about topics ranging from politics, bills before Congress or University of Northern Iowa scores.
He drew worry from his supporters, as well as national acclaim for his 2009 Tweet about an injury he sustained while burning a brush pile on his farm that ended “PantsBurnLegWound.”
