(AP) - The city of Palo, which was hit hard by the floods of 2008, is receiving more than $6 million in federal flood recovery dollars to upgrade its water supply.
Gov. Chet Culver announced the funds on Monday as part of a $17 million award to 10 Iowa communities damaged by the floods in June 2008. The flooding caused an estimated $10 billion in damage statewide.
The money for Palo will connect the city to Hiawatha's water supply, add 70 fire hydrants and a 200,000-gallon elevated storage tank.
The cities of Elkader, Marshalltown, Anamosa, Brandon, Fonda, Spillville, Centerville, Elgin and Parkersburg also received money.
In each city, the money went to water system and storm system improvement projects.
