Eastern Iowa Airport surpasses one million passengers in 2016

CEDAR RAPIDS - The Eastern Iowa Airport saw more than one million passengers last year - marking the airport's seventh time surpassing such a threshold.

A total of 1,084,310 passengers flew into and out of the Cedar Rapids airport in 2016, according to a Monday news release from the airport.

Last year saw the third-most passengers in airport history and only the seventh time the number surpassed 1 million.

However, the number does show a slight decline from the previous two years. Airport passengers peaked at 1,132,991 in 2014 and dropped to 1,105,625 in 2015, according to data.

Last year did end on a high note, however, as the airport saw record passenger numbers in October and November of that year.

Larger aircrafts allow for more seating, while direct flights to destinations such as Charlotte, N.C., also help boost ridership numbers, according to the news release.

As for this year, the number of flights is up six percent and the number of seats is up 11 percent compared to the same time last year, the release states.
