Paula Dreeszen of Iowa City has announced as the second Republican candidate vying for the Iowa House of Representatives District 77 seat.
Dreeszen, who described herself in a Tuesday news release as a concerned citizen, mother, grandmother, educator and business operator, said she promotes policies that promote families, farmers and small businesses.
'I know the challenges of working multiple jobs to raise a family in Iowa, because I've done it,” she said in the release. 'I'm running for state representative because I want to represent the rest of us.”
Dreeszen said she also wants to work to reduce taxes and government waste.
She joins a contested race for the Johnson County seat. The term will be vacant at the end of the year with Rep. Sally Stutsman's not running for re-election this fall.
Dreeszen will be up against GOP candidate and former Tiffin Mayor Royce Phillips in the June primary.
Democrats Amy Nielsen, North Liberty's mayor, and Tiffin's Abbie Weipert are also running for the seat.
The deadline for candidates running for county offices is the close of the business day March 30.
District 77 is a largely rural district that covers most of Johnson County west of Interstate 380 and the portion of the county south of Iowa City. The district also covers several communities including North Liberty, Tiffin, Oxford, Swisher and Shueyville.
