The public can weigh in on how to get the federal debt under control at a Debt Reduction Summit Sept. 19 in Iowa City.
The Johnson County Task Force on Aging and Johnson County AARP are sponsoring the summit at 2 p.m. at the new Iowa State Extension Building, Johnson County Fairgrounds, 3109 Old Highway 218 S, Iowa City.
Representatives of Sens. Tom Harkin and Chuck Grassley and Rep. Dave Loebsack have been invited to listen to the views of citizens and to report to their congressman.
Mike Owen, assistant director of the Iowa Policy Project, will open the summit with a brief statement on debt reduction.
Persons attending the summit will be provided a list of the most widely discussed options related to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and revenue enrichment. In turn, persons will be provided an opportunity to ask questions and/or make a one minute statement about what they feel the Joint Select Committee should recommend.
At the end of the summit, every person in attendance will be afforded the opportunity to vote on the various proposals. The opinions expressed and the vote tallies will be shared with the three congressional members representing Johnson County, the Joint Select Committee and President Obama.
