The North Liberty City Council has unanimously appointed David Moore to fill the vacant council seat.
After Tom Salm died in May, the council appointed Mayor Pro Tem Gerry Kuhl to the mayoral seat. Kuhl gave up his city council seat June 24 when he was sworn in as mayor.
Moore is the sales manager for Beisser Lumber, and has been actively involved in the North Liberty community as the chair of the Planning and Zoning Commission, Telecommunications Commission and the recent North Liberty Blues and BBQ event.
'I feel confident in knowing what I know and what I do on a day-to-day basis. I believe I could go right to work on the very first day,” Moore said. 'Working on some of the more complicated issues usually starts with Planning and Zoning and then goes to (City Council).”
The council held a special session Tuesday night to give five applicants an opportunity to speak with the council as a group instead of holding individual interviews.
'It would have been easier if we had 600 people voting,” said council member Terry Donahue.
The five residents to apply for the position were Jay M. Franklin, Sara C. Langenberg, Moore, Amy Neilsen and Annie Obrecht.
The council members expressed a preference for candidates who could begin work immediately to continue working within the two-year city plan. They said they ultimately chose Moore because of his involvement with the Planning and Zoning Commission and familiarity with the council.
Moore's term as a council member will last until November. Kuhl also will need to run for re-election in November.
'I'm glad I'm not running this November, because all five of you would be comfortable sitting up here,” council member Chris Hoffman told the applicants.
The council encouraged all the applicants to be involved in other government opportunities and to run for city council in future elections.
'I think the city could really use you guys.” said council member Brian Wayson.
