Council to hold public hearing on Second Avenue closure

It's all-but official: The City Council is slated on Tuesday to set Aug. 24 as the date for a much-anticipated public hearing on a proposal to close Second Avenue SE between 10
th
and 12
th
streets SE so Physicians' Clinic of Iowa can build a new medical facility at the site.
St. Luke's Hospital, which owns the land on which PCI has proposed to build its new facility, is formally listed on the City Council agenda as the entity making the request to close a portion of Second Avenue SE.
St. Luke's also is asking for the closure of 11
St. Luke's Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, PCI and the city agreed last October to work together to create a special Cedar Rapids Medical District between the two hospitals. PCI's new building, as now planned, would sit in what is the middle of Second Avenue SE in the Medical District.
