City of Cedar Rapids controlled burns along riverfront this week for native prairie management
The Cedar Rapids Fire Department announced it will be conducting controlled burns this week along riverfront areas to burn off non-native grass and make a bed for planting native prairie grass.
Beginning 8 a.m. Monday, the fire department and Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation will be burning near Sunner Park, the McGrath Amphitheatre and Tree of Five Seasons.
Controlled burns are planned between Monday, April 15, and Thursday, April 18, weather permitting, according to the release.
The burn is 'one of the best methods to control invasive plants, saplings and woody vegetation, and significantly benefits native prairie ecosystems,” the release stated.
