Due to an unusually rainy month, the Cedar River this week reached record December levels.
The river reached 11.75 feet Friday, the highest its been in the month of December since 1991 when it topped out at 11.61 feet. The National Weather Service's Quad Cities office predicted the river would crest at 11.8 feet Friday. NWS officials said the high river is a result of the three to five inches of rain that fell in the Cedar River watershed over last weekend.
Sewer Superintendent Jon Durst said he expects the river level to lower this weekend and the rain Sunday night and Monday likely won't cause issues. Otis Road SE will remain closed throughout the weekend, a routine measure for that area since it's low-lying, he said.
'This crest should pass relatively unnoticed by the general public,” Durst said.
