CEDAR RAPIDS - City officials and engineering consulting firm HR Green Inc. will conduct a neighborhood workshop on Thursday evening in northwest Cedar Rapids to discuss the city's coming flood-protection system.
The workshop begins at 6 p.m. at Harrison Elementary School, 1310 11th St. NW.
The session is part of an ongoing effort to get fresh input from residents on flood control and on the alignment and the design of the system in and near the Time Check Neighborhood in northwest Cedar Rapids.
The session will begin with a short presentation to be followed by a series of group activities.
In December, the city is planning a communitywide forum on the flood-protection system.
A great deal of pre-construction design work and community outreach already has been done on the east-side flood protection, work that has been carried out by the Army Corps of Engineers.
The city has hired Stanley Consultants Inc. to help further the pre-construction and public outreach work for east-side protection.
In November 2008, the City Council approved a 'preferred” flood-protection alignment after several months of study with city officials, experts and the Army Corps of Engineers as well as public input. The preferred alignment remains a guideline for a final alignment.
