The Spring Large Item Drop-off Event held on Saturday May 12, was a huge success. Almost 1,000 people participated in the event, but the wait time for drivers did not exceed 20 minutes. While accurate numbers are not available for all the material collected on Saturday, here is a snapshot:
• 300 appliances accepted for recycling
• 893 tires accepted for recycling
• 41.07 tons of large items sent to the landfill
• 2 trailers full of electronics collected for recycling
If residents were unable to participate in Saturday's event, several resources exist to help residents dispose of large items all year long. The Cedar Rapids Solid Waste & Recycling Division will schedule pick-ups of large items through their bulky-item collection program all year long. There is a fee associated with this service, which is added to the customers' utility bill. More information about this program is available at
www.CityofCR.com/Garbage or by calling (319) 286-5897.
Also, the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency collects scrap metal and electronics at no charge throughout the year at both locations (2250 A Street and 1954 County Home Road). More information about all the services offered by the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency is available at
