Despite frigid temperatures, a driving wind and rain, 47 volunteers attended the 2012 I-380 CleanUpCR Event to pick up litter along the interstate. These dedicated citizens collected 68 bags of litter from Wilson Avenue to Blairs Ferry Road. One volunteer took the day off work to participate in the event. Several others worked together to drag a semi-truck tire out of the ditch, which weighs over 350 pounds. The Chrome Divas had a group of about 10 volunteers to pick up along the Blairs Ferry Road intersection as part of their regular adopt-a highway activities. Picking up litter may not be the most fun activity in the world, but these citizens showed dedication and commitment to their community by braving the elements to make Cedar Rapids and Hiawatha cleaner, healthier communities.
The event's success was helped by the generous donation of granola bars by Quaker Oats and a slice of pizza and beverage by Sam's Club, who also acted as the staging area for the event.
Residents who missed the opportunity to participate in a group litter collection activity will have another chance to work with community members at the Neighborhood Litter Collection on May 5th. More information is available at
