This is John McGlothlen with The Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Monday, July 11th.
For our Monday in the Cedar Rapids area, we’ll have a chance of showers and thunderstorms before noon, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. It will be partly sunny, with a high near 87. Winds from the northwest, 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation at 30%. Then tonight, mostly clear, with a low around 64.
Police are investigating after a shots-fired incident Saturday injured one in southeast Cedar Rapids. At 2:34 p.m., police were dispatched to the 800 block of 16th Street SE for a report of shots fired, according to a city public safety news release. In the 800 block of Camburn Court SE, one block to the west, they found evidence of multiple shots fired but no victim in the area. Soon after police arrived, a person with a single gunshot wound to the shoulder arrived at a hospital by private vehicle. Authorities said the victim was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Several hundred people gathered Sunday at the Iowa State Capitol to demonstrate for abortion rights in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which removed the federal right to an abortion and gave states the ability to restrict access to abortion. The rally was organized by a broad coalition of Iowa-based civil rights and reproductive rights organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Iowa and the Great Plains Action Society.
