The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has issued an Air Quality Advisory until noon Monday for all of Iowa. The smoke plume from the Canadian wildfires that entered Iowa Thursday, continues to impact the state. Until the plume clears around noon on Monday, fine particulate levels above the EPA health standard are expected, and sensitive groups - like the elderly, those with respiratory or heart disease, and children - should limit prolonged outdoor exertion until air quality conditions improve. Our high temperature in the Cedar Rapids area today is expected to be near 79 with sunny skies, and tonight should be mostly clear with a low around 58.
A 22-year-old Marion man was killed in a collision with a semi tractor-trailer Saturday on Highway 1 in Linn County. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office said that Kyle Goodell was driving a 2004 Toyota Camry, crossed the centerline, south of Light Road in Mount Vernon, and struck a semi shortly before 10 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three people were arrested Saturday afternoon after a shooting that left three people, including two of those arrested, with non-life-threatening injuries. Officers were dispatched to a disturbance involving a firearm in the 1900 block of Bever Avenue SE. The people involved are related to each other or had a former relationship, police said. Lamel Lamont Brandon, 45, was arrested on charges of felon in possession of a firearm, going armed with intent and intimidation with a weapon. Darius Lamel Howard Brandon, 27, was arrested on a charge of going armed with intent. He suffered a graze wound and was evaluated at a hospital. The Brandons were accused of intending to use a firearm against Jeremy Dell Hepker, according to criminal complaints. Hepker, 36, was charged with going armed with intent and intimidation with a weapon. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital by ambulance. A 25-year-old woman suffered injuries in the incident and was transported to the hospital.
The top-seeded Marion Indians defeated No. 3-seed Dubuque Wahlert, 7-6, in a Class 3A championship game thriller Saturday at University of Iowa’s Duane Banks Field. Marion came away with the top prize in its sixth overall state appearance and fourth trip in the last five seasons.
