What to make of the bowls?

Jan. 1, 2010 4:26 pm
Sitting here watching (sort of) the Rose Bowl. It's not keeping my attention as much as that crossword puzzle I'm working on.
We're 31 games deep into this seemingly never-ending bowl season. First impression is there are WAY too many bowls.
I mean, come on, anyone with an objective eye who watched Iowa State and Minnesota play Thursday night can tell you it's a joke those two teams were in bowls. But I digress.
Next impression is college football is one giant mess of parity this season. Figured out the bowl records for all the conferences so far and this is what I got:
ACC 3-2
Big East 4-3
Big 10 3-3
Big 12 4-3
Conference USA 2-4
Independents 1-0
Mid-American 0-4
Mountain West 4-1
Pac-10 2-5
SEC 5-4
Sun Belt 1-0
Western Athletic 2-2
Great, great showing by the Mountain West, which might just make the rest of the country stand up and take notice. The mighty SEC might not be as good as many thought (actually I've thought that for awhile).
Big 10 has been respectable, especially considering its two losses have been in overtime (Northwestern) and by one point (Minnesota). The Big 12 has done OK, other than Texas A&M's debacle. The Pac-10, umm, isn't very good.
Anyway, I'll update this as the games go on. Happy bowling!!
