CLASS 2A
IOWA CITY REGINA (13-0) vs. SPIRIT LAKE (13-0)
When, Where: 1:05 p.m., UNI-Dome, Cedar Falls
Rankings: Regina is No. 1, Spirit Lake No. 3
Noteworthy: Regina has won 27 games in a row, as it looks to be a repeat state champion. The Regals built a big lead in their semifinal Monday against Dyersville Beckman and hung on for a 35-28 win. Spirit Lake topped second-ranked West Marshall, 35-14. Regina has a potent and diverse offense that rides the trio of quarterback Nate Streb and running backs Jacob Vollsted and Joe McCaffery. Streb hasn't thrown an interception this season, accounting for over 2,000 yards and 29 touchdowns rushing and passing. Vollstedt and McCaffery have a combined for 2,500 yards rushing and 42 TDs (21 each). Spirit Lake mirrors Regina in many respects. Its closest game was a 21-10 win in the regular season over Central Lyon/G-LR. The Indians are in the finals for the first time. Quarterback Paul Brown has over 2,000 yards passing and rushing and 29 total TDs. Running back Luke Kabele has rushed for 1,328 yards and 18 touchdowns.
CLASS 3A
DECORAH (11-2) vs. LAPORTE CITY UNION (11-2)
When, Where: 4:05 p.m., UNI-Dome, Cedar Falls
Rankings: Both are unranked
Noteworthy: These teams met in the season opener way back in late August, with Union winning, 20-17. The Knights are a much different team now, with Jay Scheel taking over at quarterback for the injured Trev Hadachek, and Hadachek moving to Scheel's spot at wide receiver. A dual threat, Scheel has thrown for 1,223 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 493 yards and five TDs. Running back Wes Burnside is the third head of Union's three-headed monster offensively, rushing for 1,851 yards and 29 touchdowns. Decorah will counter with a power-running offense that hopes to eat clock and keep Union's high-octane offense off the field. The Vikings are led by running backs Josey Jewell (1,408 yards rushing, 16 TDs) and Kyle Hove (843 yards, seven TDs). This is the first time in the finals for Union, the eighth for Decorah. The Vikings have won four championships, the last in 1989, the back end of three consecutive titles.
