ISU 2-Minute Drill: Oklahoma
Nov. 5, 2015 5:30 pm
ISU RUSH OFFENSE VS. OKLAHOMA RUSH DEFENSE
Mike Warren hopes to become the first ISU rusher to surpass 1,000 yards when he goes up against the Sooners. He's 46 yards shy of the mark and with an improving offensive line in front of him, Warren will have his shot to slip through the OU defensive front. Oklahoma is stout up front, but gives up 153 rushing yards per game. Advantage: Iowa State
ISU PASS OFFENSE VS. OU PASS DEFENSE
Joel Lanning proved he is a capable passer with 188 yards and a score against Texas, but the Oklahoma secondary is the strength of the defense. The Sooners are the top pass defense in the Big 12 and give up just 168.4 yards per game through the air. Lanning has weapons on the outside in Allen Lazard, Quenton Bundrage and Dondre Daley, but OU defenders have 11 interceptions and hold opponents to a 52.6 percent completion rate. Advantage: Oklahoma
OU RUSH OFFENSE VS. ISU RUSH DEFENSE
Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon are the one-two punch in the OU ground attack and help lead the Sooners to 202.9 rushing yards per game. Iowa State held Texas rushers — the strength of the UT offense — to 134 yards last week, but the Sooners pass game is the catalyst to set up the run game. Bobby Leath and Trent Taylor will return after sitting out with injuries to give the ISU defensive line much needed depth. Advantage: Oklahoma
OU PASS OFFENSE VS. ISU PASS DEFENSE
OU quarterback Baker Mayfield beat out last year's starter, junior Trevor Knight, as the signal caller and has the second-best passing efficiency in the Big 12. He throws for 308.8 yards per game with 25 touchdowns to four interceptions. Sterling Shepard is Mayfield's go-to target and has 5.4 catches per game and 91.5 yards per game. After holding Texas in check last week in passing, the ISU secondary will have its hands full with a fast, potent air attack Saturday. Advantage: Oklahoma
SPECIAL TEAMS
Oklahoma freshman Austin Seibert punts and kicks and averages 43.9 yards per punt and is 11-for-13 on field goals with a long of 46 yards. Allen Lazard has practiced all week for Iowa State and has fielded a handful of punts in practice since his rotator cuff injury, but will be a game-time decision on whether or not he'll return punts instead of Trever Ryen. Advantage: Oklahoma
INTANGIBLES
1. Lopsided series — Oklahoma leads the all-time with Iowa State 72-5-2 and is 37-3-1 in games played in Norman.
2. Long streak — The last Cyclones win in the series came in Norman, 33-31, in 1990. The 16-game winning streak since for Oklahoma is the longest such winning streak against any OU opponent.
3. Closing in — Mike Warren, from Lawton, Okla., needs 46 yards to become the first Iowa State rusher to break 1,000 yards since Alexander Robinson did in 2009.
3 AND OUT
1. Bouncing back — The lone loss for Oklahoma this season was in the Red River Showdown against Texas, 24-17. Since then, the Sooners have outscored their three opponents — Kansas State, Texas Tech and Kansas — 180-34.
2. Reunion — Iowa State offensive line coach Brandon Blaney was on Bob Stoops' staff at Oklahoma from 1999-2000 and OU special teams/running backs coach Jay Boulware was on the Cyclones staff from 2007-08.
3. On a roll — In its last 96:48 of game time, Iowa State has outscored Baylor and Texas, 51-10, and had the ball on offense 61:33 of that time, all with Joel Lanning at quarterback.
ISU WILL WIN IF ... It can slow down Oklahoma on offense and force the Sooners into mistakes. Through their last three games, the Sooners have averaged 60 points and given up 11.3 points on average. Iowa State will have to control the time of possession and force Oklahoma into uncharacteristic mistakes on offense.
OU WILL WIN IF ... It can pressure Joel Lanning into mistakes. Lanning handled the Texas front seven well last week, but if the Sooners can slow Mike Warren and get to Lanning in the backfield, the OU offense will be able to take advantage of a tired ISU defense.
PREDICTION: Oklahoma 49, Iowa State 28
