Iowa high school state football championships: Thursday's final scores and coverage

It's time to crown the 2018 state football champions at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

We'll update this post througout the day with scores and coverage from the first three of this year's six championship games.

8-Player

No. 6 New London 55, Rockford 14

Isaac McSorley threw for 194 yards and a pair of scores and Keontae Luckett rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns as New London walloped Rockford for its first state championship.

The Tigers (12-1) led 21-6 at halftime, then poured it on with 21 unanswered points in the third quarter.

McSorley completed 7 of 10 passes with an interception. Darius Whaley and Mason Porter hauled in receiving TDs. Luckett averaged 7.4 yards per carry and Joran Johnson also found the end zone twice on the ground, totaling 50 yards on nine carries. Caydin Wahls ran for NL's other TD.

Jacob Staudt rushed for 113 yards for the Warriors (11-2) but was 4 of 13 passing for 55 yards, a TD and a pick. Dillon Schriever had a rushing and receiving touchdown.

Rockford had four turnovers, including a fumble that Porter returned 17 yards to the end zone in the third. Down 14-6 in the second quarter, the Warriors were stuffed on fourth-and-goal from the 1. The Tigers scored on their ensuing possession and never looked back.

Class A

No. 1 Hudson 30, No. 3 Avoca AHSTW 7

Hudson broke open a 13-0 game with 17 straight points to start the second half and rolled to its first championship since 1994.

Christian Seres rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries for the Pirates (13-0). Jacob Murray also rushed for two scores and completed 10 of 16 passes for 116 yards.

Hudson gained 200 yards on the ground while limiting the Vikings to 62. AHSTW (12-1) committed 11 penalties for 111 yards.

Blake Osbahr scored AHSTW's only TD on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Class 3A

No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier 34, No. 8 Western Dubuque 20

Quinn Schulte hit backup running back Patrick Chambers for a 33-yard touchdown and ran for another in the fourth quarter, leading top-ranked Xavier to a 34-20 victory over No. 8 Western Dubuque in the Class 3A state football final Thursday night at the UNI-Dome.

The Saints won their second straight state crown, winning their 26th consecutive game.

'It's been an incredible ride for us seniors to come out and do a job,' Schulte said. 'We'll have to pass it on to new leaders next year.'
