Iowa high school state football championships: Friday's final scores

Three more state champions were crowned at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls on the final day of the 2018 Iowa high school football season.

Class 1A

No. 2 West Sioux 52, No. 1 Dike-New Hartford 38

West Sioux won its second straight state title in a shootout that set a Class 1A record for combined points in a championship game (90).

The Falcons (12-1) won the Class A championship last year, then moved up to 1A this year and outscored top-ranked Dike-New Hartford (12-1). Their only loss was to 2A No. 2 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley.

Hunter Dekkers hit Kade Lynott for the 48-yard go-ahead touchdown with 2:03 left. The Wolverines fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Dekkers sealed the victory with a 25-yard rushing TD.

Dekkers was 18 of 33 for a 1A title game record 391 yards, five touchdowns (another record) and two picks, plus added 120 yards and a score on the ground. He and Lynnott connected on a 55-yard touchdown to tie it at 38 with 6:50 to go. Chase Koopmans followed with a fourth-down interception to set up the wining TD.

West Sioux scored 14 unanswered points in the third quarter after trailing 23-17 at halftime, then the Wolverines followed with 14 consecutive points of their own to start the fourth.

Drew Sonenberg passed for 282 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions for D-NH, completing 11 of 21 passes.

Class 2A

No. 1 Monroe PCM 28, No. 2 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 7

Reed Worth passed for 262 yards and three touchdowns and PCM (13-0) completed a perfect season with its first state football championship.

The Mustangs held the Nighthawks (11-2) to 204 yards total offense, including a mere 23 on the ground. They picked off BHRV quarterback J.T. Van't Hul four times.

Van't Hul found Cody Post for a 28-yard TD to cut the lead to 13-7 with 7:33 left in the third quarter. But Wes Cummings, who totaled 129 yards rushing, responded with a 7-yard TD on PCM's next drive.

PCM started the game with a bang. On the first play after an Olin Meinders interception, the Mustangs turned a flea-flicker into a 55-yard touchdown when Worth hit a wide-open Preston VanWyk. Worth completed 16 of 27 passes, four to VanWyk for 129 yards. Brayton VanDyke and Isaac Telfer also caught touchdown passes.

Class 4A

No. 4 West Des Moines Dowling 22, No. 3 Cedar Falls 16

Dowling took advantage of special teams miscues to score the last 15 points and win its sixth straight Class 4A state championship.

A high snap on a punt gave the Maroons possession at the CF 14, and Teagan Johnson scored on a 9-yard run two plays later to cut the lead to 16-14.

The Tigers' next possession ended with a 24-yard punt to the CF 42, and Dowling (11-2) took the lead on Johnson's 2-yard TD run with 3:58 remaining.

Dowling's own punting mishap gave Cedar Falls another chance. The Tigers took over at Dowling's 40 after the Maroons' punter dropped the snap, but Connor Jackman picked off Cael Loecher on the very next play.

Johnson fished with 68 yards rushing and Zach Watters completed 9 of 16 passes for 131 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown to Jack Lyman at the end of the first half that sliced Cedar Falls' lead to 13-7.

The Tigers (12-1) gained just 183 yards total offense, including 60 through the air. Sam Gary rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown. Matthew Cook hit field goals from 31, 41 and 32 yards.
