Here’s our Week 8 roundup with Iowa high school football scores, stats and complete Gazette-area coverage from Friday, Oct. 13, 2023.
Iowa City High 30, Linn-Mar 0
The first lightning strike delayed the start by about 50 minutes.
Iowa City High provided the second lightning strike that produced a charge that was consistent as the rain that fell over Bates Field.
Bobby Bacon and Jeremiah Madlock struck for a 63-yard touchdown pass in the opening quarter. Miles Parlet added the thunder behind a strong rush attack that complemented a stingy defense. The Little Hawks improved their postseason standing Friday night with a dominant 30-0 victory over Linn-Mar.
“I’m proud of our team effort,” City High Coach Mitch Moore said. “The character and continuity of our team really showed tonight. We’re a team that has been battle-tested all year long. We’ve faced a lot of adversity. We’ve lost four starters on defense that we’ve had to have guys learn on the job, on the fly, during the season, and we have.”

5A No. 8 Bettendorf 35, 5A No. 10 Cedar Rapids Prairie 8
Not much to say, other than this:
Bettendorf was better.
The Class 5A eighth-ranked Bulldogs ran, defended the run and whipped No. 10 Cedar Rapids Prairie, 35-8, at rainy John Wall Field on Friday.
Jackson Laver’s fumble recovery in the end zone gave the Bulldogs (7-1) their first touchdown, and the visitors were off and running.
The tale was told on the ground. Bettendorf ran for 298 yards on 43 carries. Matthys netted 138 yards on just five carries, and Barta added 97 yards on 18 attempts. Prairie, on the other hand, rushed for minus-2 yards.

Marion 38, Mason City 0
So what’s it like to play an entire football game in a veritable downpour?
“Oh, my gosh, it was so much fun,” Kaiden Griffith said.
Yeah, especially when you are winning and winning comfortably, which Griffith and his Marion Wolves did Friday night, 38-0, over Mason City on soggy Senior Night.
“We came out here, and pregame it wasn’t raining,” said Griffith, the standout wide receiver-defensive back-punt returner. “So we weren’t really expecting anything. Then it started raining, and passing the ball was (very difficult). We got used to things, and started running the ball the rest of the game.”
Marion (6-2) changed its plan mid-flight, so to speak, and simply pounded Mason City (2-6), rushing 42 times for 262 yards. That included touchdown scurries by running back Trey Franck (4 yards), quarterback Kaleb Diers (52 yards) and receiver Darius Rouson (16 yards) in that order.

4A No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier 35, Clear Creek Amana 7
Cedar Rapids Xavier has booked its ticket to the state football playoffs for the 20th time since 2001.
The fifth-ranked Saints (6-2, 4-0) earned the Class 4A District 3 title with a 35-7 victory over Clear Creek Amana (2-6, 2-2) at Clipper Field Friday night, thus making postseason qualification “official.”
“We just told the guys right here after the game that winning one high school football game is hard to do,” Xavier Coach Duane Schulte said. “So for these guys to end up winning enough to be a district champion is a credit to our kids and all the hard work they put in.”
Xavier had 138 rushing yards, 151 passing yards and 12 first downs in the first half as it built a 27-0 lead. Clear Creek Amana had just 12 yards of total offense in the first half.

North Linn 56, Bellevue 6
North Linn football coach Jared Collum takes pride in his team's ball-hawking ability on defense.
Cael Benesh and his teammates took that ball-hawking to an entire different level during Friday night's game with Bellevue.
The Lynx took the ball away from the visitors nine times, including eight interceptions, rolling to a 56-6 victory on a windy, rainy night on North Linn's field.
In a game where the prize was a Class A playoff berth, the Lynx (6-2, 5-2 in District 4) turned away the Comets at every turn. Benesh led the turnover party with four interceptions, returning a pair for touchdowns. Breckyn Betenbender had three picks of his own while Jake Van Etten returned a fumble for a score.
“I've never seen it, never heard of it,” Collum said of a team having eight picks in one game. “And to have one kid with four and taking two back for touchdowns is even more amazing.”

8P No. 6 Central City 66, Midland 18
Sixth-ranked Central City, district title already in hand, enjoyed a coronation night, slipping and sliding in the rain and dispatching Midland, 66-18.
Quarterback Jayden Hanson accounted for the first five Central City scores, running for three and connecting with Mekhi Benton on two more as the Wildcats seized a 50-6 halftime lead on Midland (2-4, 3-5).
For a program that has produced a 37-57 record over the past decade, it was an experience the Wildcats (6-0, 7-1) thoroughly enjoyed.
“It was fun,” Benton said. “Especially for senior night. We’ve come a long way from not being as successful as in our younger years. Everybody said we should be better as we get older if we stick to it.”
