The Gazette’s Week 7 Iowa high school football roundup with Friday night’s statewide scores and complete coverage of area games.
3A No. 2 Williamsburg 42, 3A No. 5 Solon 13
The most prolific passing duo in Iowa high school football?
Hocker-to-Heitman has a nice ring to it.
The all-class state leader in touchdown passes, Grant Hocker threw five of them Friday night. Three of them went to Rayce Heitman, the all-class state leader in touchdown receptions.
That, and a pivotal early fourth-down stop by Trenton Davies led second-ranked Williamsburg to a 42-13 Class 3A District 5 romp over No. 5 Solon at Bob Murphy Stadium.
“He trusts me to go get the ball,” Heitman said after pushing his TD-reception total to 19. “And I trust him to make the throws.”
Williamsburg (6-1 overall, 3-0 district) outscored the Spartans 21-0 in the second half to pull away. The Raiders were effective both on the ground (215 yards, 102 by Nile Sinn) and through the air (206 yards and those five TD passes by Hocker).

Maquoketa Valley 35, A No. 9 North Linn 16
Someone finally scored on Maquoketa Valley’s football team Friday night. It’d been five weeks and 21 quarters since that happened.
But that was just part of the news in this Class A showdown. The biggest part was MV’s offense cranking out five touchdowns and 35 points to upset ninth-ranked North Linn, 35-16.
“Of course it’s a team effort,” added sophomore MV receiver-defensive back Eli Dougherty. “I don’t know how to say this (specifically), but everybody is doing their jobs. That’s how everybody gets their stats. It’s a team victory. That’s all I’ve got to say.”
Dougherty said enough here with two interceptions that helped his team score a pair of touchdowns. Then he had one of his own on a beautiful play in which he ran a stop-and-go pattern and hauled in a beautifully thrown deep ball over the North Linn secondary for a 28-16 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter.
Maquoketa Valley is 6-1 overall, its lone loss in the season opener to Cascade, 10-9. The Wildcats are 6-0 in District 4.
North Linn (6-1) lost for the first time overall and, obviously, in District 4 play.
Maquoketa Valley took a 12-0 lead after the first quarter on touchdowns runs of 10 and 5 yards by sophomore running back Rogan Heidt.
Heidt had 125 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 20 carries for Maquoketa Valley. North Linn actually outgained the Wildcats by a 284-221 margin.

4A No. 5 Decorah 57, Marion 14
Decorah turned a cold start into its own snowball effect. And once it started rolling, the Vikings’ avalanche overwhelmed Marion.
Quarterback Louis Bucksa passed for four touchdowns and Trevor Kuennen returned an interception for a score in the second quarter.
Bucksa finished with 241 passing yards, including 97 to Larson. He also rushed for a TD in the third.
“We wanted to run the ball and our game plan was to get some,” Decorah first-year head coach Mike Tangen said. “Once they started triggering down, we knew the passing game was going to have to loosen up a little bit. That’s what we had to do.
“Louis did a good job all night, staying calm. He threw to the open guy. Once we got rolling it was fun.”

5A No. 6 Linn-Mar 55, Davenport West 6
Dylan Muszynski had just three carries, but two went for long touchdown runs as the Lions rolled to an easy win at Linn-Mar Stadium.
Muszynski had 116 yards on three carries, but two of the runs went for scores of 55 and 49 yards as Linn-Mar (6-1) likely locked up a Class 5A playoff berth with the win. Kain Polniak and Carson Luense each returned interceptions for scores for Linn-Mar, which held the Falcons (0-7) to 151 total yards.
Alex Thurm, Chase Bradley, Tyree Alons and Emerson Gasper all had TDs for the Lions, who led 49-0 at intermission.

Cedar Rapids Prairie 56, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 7
Prairie got rolling early with two touchdowns in the first six-plus minutes of the game. After Prairie tailback Brandon Brune scored with a short touchdown run, Nile Fall recovered a Jefferson fumble in the end zone on the J-Hawks’ first offensive play.
From that point on, tight end David Fason took over the game. His touchdown receptions of 10 and 25 yards pushed the Prairie advantage to 28-0 less than two minutes into the second quarter.
On defense, the 6-foot-1, 235-pound defensive end registered a strip sack fumble, two fumble recoveries and a tackle for loss – all before halftime – as Prairie took a 49-7 lead into the locker room.
“All week, my coaches were just saying, ‘Let the dog loose and play like there is no tomorrow,” Fason said. “I am just trying to make it to the next level. That is what it takes.”
In the third quarter, Fason took a short toss from Prairie reserve quarterback Cael Kongshaug and outran the Jefferson defense for his third receiving touchdown of the game and team-best ninth this season.
The win snapped a three-game losing skid for Prairie (3-4) and kept its Class 5A playoff hopes alive.
