All eyes are on Ames this weekend as Iowa State hosts Iowa in the first Cy-Hawk game featuring two ranked opponents. But first, it was the Little Cy-Hawk game. Iowa City High blasted Ames 43-5 to win the Little Cy-Hawk Trophy as part of Week 3 of the Iowa high school football season.
That’s one of a number of games we were tracking Friday night here at The Gazette.
Here is how the ranked teams fared this week. Find complete area coverage and scores below.
5A No. 9 Cedar Falls 24, 5A No. 3 Cedar Rapids Prairie 21
The name of the play is “Doubles Left, Touchdown.”
Though it didn’t directly result in one, it ultimately led to a touchdown with seven seconds left that gave Cedar Falls an incredible 24-21 victory over Cedar Rapids Prairie on Friday night at John Wall Field.
Quarterback Hunter Jacobson’s 6-yard TD pass on a fade pattern in the right corner of the end zone to Caeden Janssen provided the actual winning points for Class 5A ninth-ranked CF (2-1). It came after both teams had exhausted their final timeout to set up strategy.
“We had that same play called the first time there,” said Jacobson. “I liked how it looked … It was one on one, and I’m taking number 17 (Janssen) over anybody in that situation.”

5A No. 4 Cedar Rapids Kennedy 48, 4A No. 3 Cedar Rapids Washington 7
Brenden Linde was a big target for Class 5A fourth-ranked Kennedy quarterback Carson Blietz, hauling in three touchdowns in a 48-7 rout 4A No. 3 Cedar Rapids Washington Friday night at Kingston Stadium.
“A great effort on his part,” Kennedy Coach Brian White. “We had some new wrinkles we wanted to throw out there and part of it was our tight end Linde and getting him more involved in the game plan.
“We executed. The big long touchdown pass was a play we just put in this week.”
Linde didn’t catch a pass in the first two weeks. He was called on more during the week in practice. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder was ready for action.

Western Dubuque 21, Iowa City Liberty 10
Western Dubuque hadn’t started a season 0-2 since 2006.
That year, the Bobcats began 0-4.
The Bobcats had one of the state’s most difficult draws to begin the season, dropping games to 4A No. 4 Cedar Rapids Xavier and No. 2 North Scott.
Friday night, the Bobcats (1-2) resurrected their season and ensured they won’t be repeating the 0-4 start of 15 years ago with a 21-10 win over Iowa City Liberty (0-3).
“We’ve been a staff for eight years and we haven’t been 0-2,” Western Dubuque Coach Justin Penner said. “It isn’t really something we strive to be. I thought our kids had a great week of practice and didn’t behave as if we were 0-2.
“We live more of a vision than a circumstance.”

3A No. 5 Solon 28, Williamsburg 14
In a word, turnovers. Six of them to be exact. Five led to scores and Solon was the main benefactor.
The Spartans forced four of them on their way to a 28-14 victory over Williamsburg on Friday night at Spartan Stadium.
“They’re always critical,” Solon wide receiver/defensive back Jake Quillin said. “That’s what (the coaches) preach every single day in practice, that we have to get the ball out and turn it over. That’s our No. 1 thing.”

1A No. 9 Dyersville Beckman 48, 2A No. 8 Monticello 21
Owen Huehnergarth ran through, and sometimes ran over, Monticello defenders as Class 1A ninth-ranked Dyersville Beckman rolled to a 48-21 non-district football victory Friday night at Dean Nelson Field.
“We’re not the fastest team, but we’re physical,” Huehnergarth said after rushing for 272 yards on 41 bruising carries. He scored four touchdowns, including a 41-yarder in the fourth quarter in which he ran over one tackler and slipped through another.
“I love physical contact. I love hitting people,” he said. “It fuels me.”
He seemed to have more of that fuel in the tank in the second half after the Blazers (3-0) sprinted away from what had been a competitive game early.

A No. 5 Lisbon 18, Alburnett 6
Lisbon's Phillip Whitman and his staff had a long talk with their players after Friday night's game.
The fifth-ranked Lions came away with an 18-6 win over a spirited Alburnett team in the Class A, District 5 opener for both teams at Jim Carver Field. However the team meeting centered on one thing.
"I didn't think our focus was completely there," Whitman said. "We need to learn to respect our opponents a little better. Sometimes I think we think we're better than we are. Our focus has to get better, plain and simple."
