Iowa high school football roundup: Week 7 area scores, stats, postponements and more

Lightning was the theme of Week 7, as almost every area high school football game was delayed, bumped up or postponed because of storms at some point Friday.

Cedar Rapids Xavier 35, Western Dubuque 0

This one wasn't over before it began. Just pretty close, as it turned out.

When it was over is a whole other story.

Even facing another top-10 team didn't provide this Cedar Rapids Xavier football juggernaut too much of a challenge Friday afternoon/evening. The top-ranked Saints kept marching on, a 35-0 stomping of No. 7 Western Dubuque making it an even 20 wins in a row and 34 regular-season wins in a row for this impeccable Class 3A program.

Iowa City Regina 35, North Linn 12

Regina hasn't managed much traction with the run game through its first six weeks.

On a night rains transformed the football field into a quagmire after more than an hour delay at the half, the Regals needed to rely on the rush attack to help battle the conditions and a strong North Linn defense. It was enough to pull Regina above .500 for the first time this season.

Kieler Brown had his best game of the season, rushing for almost 100 yards and Ashton Cook added 151 yards in the air, leading the Regals to a 35-12 Class 1A District 6 victory over the Lynx night at North Linn High School. Regina improved to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in district play.

Cedar Rapids Prairie 41, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 6

All the weather delay did Friday night at Kingston Stadium was get Cedar Rapids Prairie out of sorts.

Keegan Simmons returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for the first of his four touchdowns as the No. 10 Hawks went on to an impressive 41-6 win over Cedar Rapids Jefferson in a Class 4A District 3 game delayed 2 hours, 32 minutes for lightning.

The Hawks (6-1, 3-0) jumped out to a 21-0 lead before the delay, that came with 19 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Simmons added a 9-yard scoring run and Nick Freel scored on an 18-yard scamper on a trick play that saw all of Prairie's players head right, except for Freel who had a clear path to the end zone.

Clear Creek Amana 17, Davenport Assumption 7

Friday night saw a little bit of everything in Tiffin. A 2-hour, 47-minute lightning delay, a host of turnovers and clutch plays.

In the end, the delay was worth it for the Clear Creek Amana football team.

The Clippers weathered the storm, literally and figuratively, defeating Davenport Assumption 17-7 for their first 7-0 start in school history. The game was called off with 8:53 remaining as more lightning entered the area. That milestone is nice, but more importantly, the No. 9-ranked Clippers are a perfect 3-0 in Class 3A district 5 while dealing the Knights (3-4, 2-1) their first district loss.

DeWitt Central 35, Iowa City Liberty 0

Iowa City Liberty had been making progress in terms of getting better every week the school's first year of varsity football.

But, the Lightning ran into a bump in the road as they came out of a two-hour weather delay slow and were shut out by DeWitt Central, 35-0, in a weather-shortened game Friday night at Iowa City Liberty High School.

'We love the guys' commitment to the program,' said Iowa City Liberty coach Jeff Gordon. 'We love that they will be back working hard to get better tomorrow. It is like life, a lot of times we focus on the highs but what really defines us is when it does not go our way.'

Central jumped out to a 35-point lead going into halftime and got in the end zone in five of its first six possessions. The Sabers defense forced the Lightning to commit four first-half turnovers, including picking off quarterback Drake Woody three times.

'They are a good team but it all starts with me,' Gordon said. 'We have to do a better job coaching our guys on ball security and a better job of putting guys in position to be successful. It is a good night for us all to look in the mirror and see where we are at. We can either feel sorry for ourselves or work hard to get better tomorrow.'

The Sabers were led by dynamic running tailback Easton Necker, who rushed for 59 yards and two scores. Quarterback Drew Kueter threw for 110 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing touchdown.

Marion 56, Dubuque Wahlert 28

Down 14-0 after the first quarter, Marion scored 42 unanswered points over the second and third to down Dubuque Wahlert, 56-28, in a Class 3A District 4 high school football game Friday night in Dubuque.

Isaac Cecheta got the ball rolling for the Indians (4-3, 3-0) with an 8-yard touchdown run, then scored on a 41-yard pass from Trevor Paulsen. Mason Rahe ended the first half with a 25 yard TD pass from Paulsen.

JuCory Higgins (34 run) and Paulsen (3 and 2 runs) gave Marion a 42-14 lead before Wahlert (0-7, 0-3) scored again.

Paulsen passed for three TDs, including a 10-yarder to Mitch McAllister in the fourth. Higgins added an 86-yard kickoff return for a TD.

Decorah 28, West Delaware 13

Jace Johnson completed 7 of 9 passes for 102 yard and three touchdowns as the Vikings improved to 3-0 in Class 3A-3 with a win at home.

Drake Shelton rushed for 84 yards and scored twice for Decorah (5-2), which led 28-0 at halftime and held the Hawks (3-4, 0-3) to 72 first-half yards.

'Offensively we were able to get after it,' Decorah Coach Pat Trewin said. 'We're very happy with that effort.'

Clay Johansen added 102 yards on the ground for the Vikings.

Nick Casey (1-yard run) and Kael Meyer (82 run) scored for West Delaware. Meyer finished with 168 yards on 19 rushes.

Independence 38, Charles City 13

Logan Schmitt passed for 210 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 108 and another TD as the Mustangs rolled on the road.

Independence improved to 6-1 overall, 3-0 in Class 3A-3.

Schmitt, who has had more than 310 yards of offense the past three weeks, completed 15 of 24 passes, hooking up with Sean Geertsema eight times for 146 yards and two TDs. Blake Bartz had three catches for 42 yards and a TD and Tristan Cordes also caught a TD pass.

Schmitt's rushing TD came on a three-yard run in the first quarter after the Comets had taken a 7-0 lead.

Dylan Koresh had 101 yards on 11 rushes for Charles City.

West Branch 28, Northeast 0

It rained. And rained. And rained some more.

And then lightning struck ... it came in the form of the Bears (6-1), who dominated the Rebels in a game shortened by weather.

Tanner Lukavsky scored twice, Beau Cornwell once and Wyatt Goodale returned a punt 65 yards for a score.

The Bears defense limited the Rebels (0-7) to minus-21 total yards.

Both teams agreed to call the game with 44 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Monticello 50, Anamosa 48

An 18-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Carlson to Tyler Luensman was the difference for the Panthers (4-3, 2-1) at Anamosa (1-6, 1-2).

Carlson completed 21 of 41 passes for 395 yards and six touchdowns.

Anamosa quarterback Matthew Walton was 20-for-33 for 374 yards and two scores, and rushed 26 times for 136 yards and three TDs.

Waukon 38, Waterloo Columbus 12

Defending state champion Waukon used a 20-point second quarter to win a Class 2A district showdown.

The Indians improved to 6-1, 3-0, dropping the Sailors to 5-2, 2-1.

'We have a young team and our kids have made good progress,' Waukon coach Chad Beerman said.
