Iowa high school football rankings: The Gazette’s post-Week 4 poll
Western Dubuque and Adel ADM share the No. 1 spot in 4A; Saint Ansgar is on top in Class A

Sep. 18, 2023 11:21 am, Updated: Sep. 18, 2023 1:01 pm
Another week, another new leader in Class 4A.
Co-leaders, actually.
Friday’s 31-24 victory over former 4A No. 1 North Scott vaulted Western Dubuque into co-ownership of this week’s top spot in The Gazette’s football rankings.
Western Dubuque and Adel ADM, both 3-1, collected 54 poll points apiece in this week’s poll. The Bobcats received three first-place votes; ADM grabbed one. No. 3 Bondurant-Farrar (3-1, 46 poll points) got the other two.
The 4A list has seen massive turnover from week to week. Cedar Rapids Xavier held the top spot until a Week 2 loss to Williamsburg. ADM was on top for a week, then it was North Scott last week.
North Scott is fourth, North Polk fifth. No. 6 Gilbert is the lone remaining 4A unbeaten.
The other change at the top this week comes in Class A, in which Madrid’s 27-9 win over former No. 1 Lynnville-Sully opened the door for Saint Ansgar to rise.
Saint Ansgar holds a 55-53 edge over Woodbury Central in poll points, including 4-2 in first-place votes. Madrid climbs three spots to No. 3 and is followed by West Hancock and North Linn.
Unbeatens Southeast Polk, West Des Moines Dowling and Bettendorf remain 1-2-3 in Class 5A. After that, the rest of the big-school field — particularly in Central Iowa — remain in whirlpool mode.
Pleasant Valley and Waukee, both 3-1, climb to fourth and fifth. The other 5A top-10 teams all are 2-2.
Williamsburg is a unanimous No. 1 in 3A now, due in part to former No. 2 Mount Vernon’s 37-20 loss to Solon.
The Raiders marched to 4-0 with a 48-14 victory over previously unbeaten Fort Madison, and will be heavy favorites the next two weeks before a showdown at Solon in Week 7.
Harlan, Creston, Davenport Assumption and Hampton-Dumont/CAL complete the 3A top five.
Van Meter maintains a razor-thin advantage (57-56 in poll points) over Central Lyon/George-Little Rock in 2A. Both teams received three first-place votes.
Four teams in 2A District 1 are ranked, and that district will begin to sort itself out this week. CL-GLR is at No. 9 Cherokee; No. 3 West Lyon is at No. 4 Western Christian.
The top five in Class A is unchanged. Grundy Center is a unanimous No. 1, followed by MFL MarMac, Underwood, Iowa City Regina and Denver.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Winfield-Mount Union and Anita CAM remain the top three in 8-Player. Bedford jumped over Remsen St. Mary’s in the No. 4 slot.
