Iowa high school football rankings: Dike-New Hartford takes over atop Class 1A

In a 1-vs.-1 battle last week, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley was The One.

As a result, there's a new No. 1 in Class 1A in this week's Gazette/KGYM high-school football poll.

Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, the top-rated team in 2A, handled former 1A No. 1 West Sioux, 42-16, in the season-opening game for both teams Friday night.

Dike-New Hartford takes over the 1A top spot in the only changing of the guard in this week's ratings.

West Des Moines Dowling (Class 4A), Cedar Rapids Xavier (3A), BH-RV (2A), Hudson (Class A) and Don Bosco (8-Player) retain their perches. Xavier and Don Bosco are unanimous No. 1s.

Dowling, the five-time defending 4A state champion, rolled to a 48-14 win Friday over Waukee. The rest of the 4A top five remains in place — Johnston, West Des Moines Valley, Bettendorf and Cedar Falls. Dowling hosts Valley this week.

Xavier whipped 1A power Iowa City Regina, 44-7, and strengthened its hold atop 3A. Lewis Central, which handled former No. 3 Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 42-14, remains second, then it's Pella, Solon and West Delaware.

BH-RV maintains a comfortable lead over No. 2 Monroe PCM in 2A. PCM was impressive in its own right, downing Newton, 50-10. Union Community, Clear Lake and Sioux Center round out the top five.

Class 1A features the closest race at the top this week, with four teams receiving at least one first-place vote. Dike-New Hartford earned two of them after a weather-shortened 21-0 win over Denver, and tallied 51 points. The Wolverines are followed by West Branch (47) and West Sioux (46). Pella Christian and Cascade are fourth and fifth.

Hudson continues as the top team in Class A after winning at Jesup, 46-8. Saint Ansgar and Algona Garrigan flip-flop at 2 and 3, then it's Avoca AHSTW and Lynnville-Sully.

Don Bosco gave former No. 3 Gladbrook-Reinbeck a rude welcome to 8-player football, piling up 30 first-quarter points in a 50-6 win at Gilbertville. Exira-EHK climbs three notches to No. 2 in a class that features four new ranked teams. Ar-We-Va, New London and Audubon complete the top five.
