The Gazette’s “Fab 5” area Class 1A players to watch during the 2024 Iowa high school football season.
Isaac Bruns
School: Sigourney-Keota
Grade: Senior
Positions: RB/LB
Height/weight: 6-foot, 190 pounds
About the player: Bruns was a first-team all-state kick returner, averaging 33 yards per kickoff return and 27 yards per punt return. A difference maker on special teams, he returned three kicks for touchdowns. Bruns rushed for 548 yards and eight TDs last year, going 7.7 yards per carry.
Matt Colony
School: Iowa City Regina
Grade: Senior
Positions: OL/DL
Height/weight: 6-2, 240
About the player: Colony was a first-team all-district pick, leading the line on both sides of the ball. He is one of Regina’s leaders. He helped the Regals average 5.6 yards per carry and finish fifth in the state for all-purpose yards as a team. Colony tallied 15 tackles and had a fumble recovery on defense.
Brennen Dale
School: West Branch
Grade: Junior
Positions: QB/DB
Height/weight: 6-1, 185
About the player: Dale was named all-district as a utility player. The versatile performer was 6-2 under center, helping the Bears to the second round of the postseason. He amassed more than 1,325 yards last year, passing for 964, and contributed to 18 TDs. The Bears’ captain will be a key part of the offense.
Quinn McGeough
School: MFL MarMac
Grade: Senior
Positions: FB/SS
Height/weight: 6-foot, 190
About the player: McGeough was an all-district player for the Bulldogs. He ranked ninth in Class 1A with 1,021 rushing yards on 179 carries. McGeough scored 12 TDs as well. A smart and complete player who is a good defender, he had 39.5 tackles (21 solo) and forced three turnovers including two fumbles.
Nate Schockemoehl
School: Cascade
Grade: Senior
Positions: TE/LB
Height/weight: 6-3, 195
About the player: Schockemoehl is a sneaky good player who ranked among 1A leaders in receptions and interceptions. A strong all-around player, he was eighth with 44 catches, 18th with 524 receiving yards and tied for ninth with four interceptions. Schockemoehl led Cascade with 79.5 tackles and 55 solo.
