Iowa high school football 2024: The Gazette’s 4A preseason rankings
Return of all-state quarterback Brady Hetzel makes defending champion Lewis Central a logical choice at No. 1

Aug. 29, 2024 7:30 am
True, Lewis Central graduated a lot.
Quarterback Brady Hetzel is back, though, and that’s a very good start in the Titans’ reloading effort.
Defending-champion Lewis Central is the consensus pick by Gazette panelists to repeat as Class 4A state football champions. The Titans (11-2) received five of six first-place votes and collected 54 poll points.
Hetzel, a senior, passed for 2,587 yards and 26 touchdowns, against 10 interceptions, and earned 4A first-team all-state honors.
Also the 4A champion in 2021, Lewis Central started 2-2 last season, then won each of its last nine games by double digits, including a 40-21 title-game win over Western Dubuque.
District 3 favorite North Scott (8-3 and a quarterfinalist last year) is No. 2, with Western Dubuque (11-2) third. Bondurant-Farrar (9-3) and Indianola (6-4) share the No. 5 spot.
Perennial power Cedar Rapids Xavier (8-3) is No. 7.
