5A No. 9 Cedar Rapids Kennedy 45, Cedar Rapids Washington 7
Cedar Rapids Kennedy was on a mission to reclaim its brand of football.
Well, mission accomplished.
The Cougars scored on their first six possessions of the game, forced five total turnovers and cruised to a 45-7 victory over Cedar Rapids Washington on Friday night at Kingston Stadium. Class 5A No. 9 Kennedy won its second straight game to improve to 2-2 and hasn’t allowed an offensive touchdown in eight quarters.
“We had to get better defensively,” Kennedy Coach Brian White said. “What it boiled down to was fundamentals, tackling. Do your assignment, do what you’re asked on the field and rely on your teammates to do their job. I think we got better last week against Linn-Mar and we were really good at that tonight.”
The Cougars overpowered Washington, recovering three fumbles and picking off a pair of passes while holding the Warriors to just 58 total yards. They also tallied five sacks.
“We love to send the dogs in,” Kennedy senior linebacker B.J. Henry said. “For the most part, everybody is doing their jobs. They are just playing fast.
“Once we get momentum going and everybody is on the same page it’s hard to stop it.”
Kennedy’s offense did capitalize when the defense got the ball. The Cougars scored 24 points off turnovers and short fields.

Iowa City High 23, Iowa City West 8
His name is Miles. His game is yards.
Lots of yards.
Miles Parlet rushed for 220 of them on 36 carries, including a back-breaking, Boot-clinching 63-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, and Iowa City High outplayed Iowa City West, 23-8, Friday night at Bates Field.
The Little Hawks (2-2) keep The Boot on the east side of town for the third consecutive year.
“Adversity is an opportunity to grow,” Parlet said. “We started 0-2, we looked at that as motivation, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
Parlet spent his first two years of high school at Cedar Rapids Washington, his junior year in Hawaii.
“This program is a blessing,” he said. “Tonight, I just followed my line.”
City dominated the action for much of the game, outgaining West (2-2) by a yardage margin of 445-227 and claiming four takeaways.

Solon 37, 3A No. 2 Mount Vernon 20
Mount Vernon had hoped to send First Street Field off on a high note.
Solon head coach Luke Stanton, a Mount Vernon alum, had his own version of a farewell.
The Spartans, led by Stanton and wildcat back Conlan Poynton, upset Class 3A No. 2 Mount Vernon, 37-20, in the final home football game for the Mustangs at First Street Field.
“It feels great,” Stanton said. “With so much history on this field ... I mean, I grew up playing pickup football games on this field and I was the water boy. It’s just kind of surreal, to be completely honest.
“As much as they wanted to win on this field for the last time, I wanted to win.”
Poynton finished with 218 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries.

5A No. 3 Bettendorf 21, Linn-Mar 14
They are bruised, battered and missing a lengthy list of players due to injury.
Even in defeat against No. 3 Bettendorf on Friday night at Linn-Mar Stadium, the Lions showed they are far from broken.
Linn-Mar battled the visiting Bulldogs on even terms the entire night. It looked like the Lions would have a chance to pull the upset when Stone Morgan connected with Landon Sorg on an apparent 18-yard scoring pass with one minute remaining.
However, it was taken off the board when officials called Linn-Mar for an illegal block, allowing Bettendorf to head home with a 21-14 victory.
Linn-Mar Coach Tim Lovell was understandably proud of the effort, coming off a 34-0 loss to Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
“The kids really responded to the next man in challenge,” he said. “We had a chance. We were one play and one call away from going to overtime with the No. 3 team in the state.”
The injury situation for the Lions has been well-documented. Junior running back Dylan Muszynski injured an ankle last week against Kennedy and his replacement, Tyree Alons, was helped off the field after just two carries on Friday night. He was ruled out for the game after taking a hit to the head.
Bettendorf (4-0) has relied mostly on its running game this season, but never really got it going against an aggressive Lion defense. Coach Aaron Wiley's team was held to 124 yards on 33 carries.

Marion 34, Maquoketa 7
There was genuine fear that Kaiden Griffith might not be able to play his senior football season.
The Marion wide receiver-cornerback took a helmet to the knee in his team’s preseason scrimmage against Linn-Mar. A lot of bad things can happen to a knee when that happens.
“I got off the field, it felt fine walking until I got down on the training bench,” Griffith said Friday night after his team beat Maquoketa, 34-7, at Marion Stadium. “Our trainer started doing her stuff, I got up, and it started buckling on me, started to move. After that, it was like ‘I don’t know if this is good.’”
But everything turned out fine. There was no major damage to his knee, some physical therapy helped things get right, and Griffith has gotten to play.
Which is a really, really good thing for Marion. The kid caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Kaleb Diers: a 29-yarder off a fade route down the left sideline in the first quarter and a 70-yarder in the third quarter in which he literally went up and over a Maquoketa defensive back to snag a long, wobbling pass from Diers, then rolling about 35 yards to the end zone.
That Griffith magic came on a third-and-long play and completely returned every ounce of momentum back to the Wolves (3-1) after Maquoketa (3-1) had snatched it with a six-minute scoring drive to start the second half. Quarterback Carter Meyer’s scrambling 12-yard TD run and the extra point made it a 13-7 game.
“Found a mismatch, had to just do what I do and go up for the jump ball. I’ll catch it,” Griffith said. “All Kaleb has to do is throw it up, and I’ll be there. I got my space, and I just took off. I think it was a game changer. Like you said, they had all the momentum. After that play, they just got down on themselves, and we took over.”

A No. 9 North Linn 48, North Cedar 0
Fueled by turnovers and the arm and legs of Jake VanEtten, Class A ninth-ranked North Linn continued its healthy start to the season with a 48-0 prep football victory Friday night over North Cedar.
The Lynx forced five turnovers. All of them left the Lynx with short fields. Short fields that VanEtten was able to capitalize on.
“I thought defensively we played really well,” North Linn Coach Jared Collum said. “Up front did a good job getting on the passer. We talked to our (defensive) backs this week about ball-hawking. Balls in the air, we wanted to go get it.”
The Knights (1-3, 0-3) were one play away from sending North Linn off the field. On third-and-12, Cole Griffith broke free of his defender and hauled in a 69-yard touchdown pass to put the Lynx up 7-0 with 5:44 left in the first quarter.
The wheels fell off from there.
Unable to budge the North Linn (4-0, 3-0) front four on the ground, the Knights continued to work through the air, but the Lynx buckled down. The snap on the Knights’ first punt attempt was high and North Linn took over deep in North Cedar territory.
This began three drives where the Lynx went 19, 29, and 10 yards as the lead quickly ballooned to 27-0 with 10:21 left in the half. The barrage included a forced fumble and a Griffith interception.
