Was it the weather? Friday the 13th? Or just another example of parity in this thrilling Iowa high school football season?
Either way, Week 8 brought us upsets galore and most likely the game of the year.
Eight teams in The Gazette’s poll loss to unraked foes Friday night. That includes Indianola shutting out one of the teams tied for the No. 1 spot in Class 4A, Adel ADM, 24-0.
Elsewhere, two top-ranked teams produced classic victories.
Class 5A No. 1 Southeast Polk scored on fourth-and-goal from inside the 1 to beat No. 2 West Des Moines Dowling, 37-34 in triple-overtime. Will their next meeting come at the UNI-Dome?
And in one of the state’s best rivalries, Class 2A No. 1 Central Lyon/George-Little Rock closed its regular season with a 7-0 win over No. 3 West Lyon in a game that fit its “Beef Bowl” name.
