The top two teams in Class 5A survived tough tests Friday night. The third remaining unbeaten wasn’t as fortunate.
No. 1 Southeast Polk held off Johnston at home, 38-35, while second-ranked West Des Moines Dowling rallied to beat sixth-ranked Ankeny Centennial on the road, 30-17. Those are the largest class’ last two unscathed teams following No. 7 Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s 34-14 win over No. 3 Bettendorf.
Class 4A still has one undefeated team left, barely — No. 6 Gilbert beat Carlisle, 32-29 in overtime. Chaos continued in that class with three teams losing to unranked opponents and fourth-ranked North Scott falling 26-20 at No. 8 Cedar Rapids Xavier.
Class 3A’s third-ranked team went down on the road as well, as No. 6 Mount Vernon opened its new stadium with a 24-7 win over Davenport Assumption.
Class 1A’s billed marquee showdown was one-sided: No. 2 Underwood handed No. 5 Treynor its first loss, 49-0. But there were thrillers elsewhere, including West Branch’s 21-17 win over No. 3 Iowa City Regina. Meanwhile, No. 8 Sumner-Fredericksburg dealt its foe its first loss for the second straight week with a 19-7 win over No. 4 Denver.
